The Ordinary, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Obbo, AJ was born in Nagongera Parish in Tororo (Archdiocese of Tororo) on 7th Oct. 1952.

He was ordained priest of the Congregation of the Apostles of Jesus (AJ) on 13th Dec. 1986 in Nagongera Parish.

He was appointed second Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese on 27th June 2007. He was ordained Bishop and installed as the second Ordinary of Soroti Catholic Diocese on 6th Oct 2007.

The Holy Father accepted the resignation of Archbishop Denis Kiwanuka of Tororo, and appointed himto become the new Archbishop of Tororo. The installation of the new Archbishop of Tororo took place in March 2015 at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral - Nyangole, in Tororo.

The Diocese of Jinja, is one of the 19 Catholic Dioceses within in Uganda under the ecclesiastical province of Tororo. The Diocese was, created and erected in August 5, 1966. This Diocese was originally part of the Vicariate of the Upper Nile and later, of the Diocese of Kampala. It was formed by separating her current territory from the former Diocese of Kampala and transferring the see to Jinja. The Diocese was first evangelized by the Mill Hill Missionaries from 1899 onwards after a short-lived attempt by a couple of Missionaries of Africa (1889-1890). At the time of its creation, the Diocese of Jinja covered a civic area then known as the District of Busoga and currently the same area is known as Busoga Sub region in the Eastern Region of Uganda.

Its (Diocese of Jinja) territorial boundaries stretches from Lake Victoria in the South, to Lake Kyoga in the North; River Nile in the West and River Mpologoma in the North East, making the Diocese of Jinja almost an Island. Now, the sub region of Busoga although remaining the same, has been subdivided into twelve (12) civic districts which include the following: Jinja city, Jinja, Kamuli, Iganga, Bugweri, Bugiri, Kaliro, Buyende, Namayingo, Namutumba, Luuka and Mayuge.

The Diocese of Jinja is currently (as of September 2025) composed of forty four (44) Parishes; however it was started with 16 Parishes under the Episcopate of Rt Rev Joseph Bernard Willigers Louis, MHM (Born 26th October 1930 – died 30th September 2012) as the pioneer Bishop. Late bishop Joseph took canonical position of the Diocese of Jinja on 3rd December 1967 and retired 2 March 2010. Rt Rev Charles Martin Wamika the current and seating Bishop is the second bishop of Jinja and also the first African Bishop to take over the see of Jinja.
