Bishop Ordinary
The Rt. Rev. Serverus Jjumba was born in Masaka on 2 nd August, 1962. He went to St. Augustine’s Primary School - Bulando and St. Paul’s Primary School -Kitovu for his primary education. In 1978 he joined to Holy Family Minor Seminary - Bukalasa for his secondary education. He was ordained to priesthood on 20 June, 1992. He joined St. Thomas Aquinas National Major Seminary - Katigondo for his Philosophical studies in 1984. In 1987 he joined St. Mary’s National Seminary - Ggaba for his Theological studies.
As a priest, he has served in a number of roles including Assistant at Mpambire Parish (Sept. 1992 – Jan. 1993); Formator and Bursar at Holy Family Bukalasa Minor Seminary (1993-2000); Masaka Diocesan Treasurer (2000-2014); and Vicar General of Masaka Diocese from 2014 to the date of his appointment as Bishop of Masaka Diocese. His Holiness Pope Francis appointed him the fourth Bishop of Masaka Diocese on 16 th April, 2019. He was consecrated and installed on 06 th July, 2019 by Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa, assisted by Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa (Kiyinda - Mityana Diocese), Bishop Lambert Bainomugisha (Auxiliary of Mbarara Archdiocese), Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga (Kampala Archdiocese) and Archbishop Luigi Bianco (Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda).

About the Diocese
Our Lady of Sorrows Cathedral - Diocese of Masaka
The Catholic Evangelization of this area was started in 1891 by the White Fathers. Three Phases can be identified within this process.
The first phase is between 1891 and 1939. The pillar of this phase was Archbishop H. Streicher. Phase two, 1939 –1961, began the establishment of Masaka as a distinct ecclesiastical territory under its first African Bishop Joseph Kiwanuka. Phase three, 1961 the dawn of national independence, which coincided with the beginning of Bishop Adrian Ddungu's episcopate and the introduction of Church Renewal by Vatican II. Adrian Kivumbi Ddungu was appointed Bishop of Masaka on 11th November, 1961, ordained Bishop on 18th March, 1962 at Bukalasa Seminary, retired on 10th January, 1998, and he died on 30th December 2009.
He was then succeeded by Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa who was appointed the Ordinary Bishop of Masaka Diocese on 10th January 1998, enthroned on 22nd March 1998 at Villa Maria Parish. He died on 20th January 2020.
