Ordinary Public Consistory for the Creation of 21 New Cardinals, held on 30.09.2023

At 10.00 morning of 30.09.2023 , on the Parvis of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Holy Father Francis held an Ordinary Public Consistory for the creation of new Cardinals, the imposition of the biretta, the consignment of the ring and the assignation of the Title or Deaconry.

The twenty-one newly-created Cardinals who received the imposition of the birettta, the consignment of the ring and the assignation of the Title or Deaconry are:

1. Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops;

2. Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches;

3. Víctor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith;

4. Emil Paul Tscherring, Apostolic Nuncio;

5. Christophe Louis Yves Georges Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio;

6. His Beatitude Pierbattista Pizzaballa, O.F.M., Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem; Stephen Brislin, Archbishop of Cape Town (Kaapstad);

7. Ángel Sixto Rossi, S.J., Archbishop of Córdoba, Argentina;

8. Luis José Rueda Aparicio, Archbishop of Bogotá;

9. Grzegorz Ryś, Archbishop of Łódź;

10. Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, Archbishop of Juba;

11. José Cabo Cano, Archbishop of Madrid;

12. Protase Rugambwa, Co-Adjutor Archbishop of Tabora;

13. Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang;

14. Stephen Chow Sau-yan, S.J., Bishop of Hong Kong;

15. François-Xavier Bustillo, O.F.M. Conv., bishop of Ajaccio;

16. Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar, Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon;

17. Ángel Fernández Artime, S.D.B., Rector Major of the Salesians;

18. Agostino Marchetti, Apostolic Nuncio;

19. Diego Rafael Padrón Sanchez, Archbishop Emeritus of Cumaná;

20. Luis Pascal Dri, O.F.M. Cap., Confessor of the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, Buenos Aires.

At the beginning of the celebration, the first of the new Cardinals, His Eminence Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, delivered an address of homage and thanks to the Pope on behalf of all the new Cardinals. Then, after the oration and the reading of a biblical passage from the Acts of the Apostles (12:1-11), the Holy Father delivered his homily.

The Pope then read the formula of creation and solemnly proclaimed the names of the new Cardinals, announcing their presbyteral or diaconal title.

The Rite continued with the profession of the faith of the new Cardinals before the People of God, and the oath of fidelity and obedience to Pope Francis and his successors.

The new Cardinals, according to the order of creation, kneeled before the Holy Father who imposed the Cardinal’s zucchetto and biretta, consigned the ring and assigned to each one a church in Rome as a sign of participation in the Pope’s pastoral care for the city, consigning to them the Bull of creation of Cardinals and the assignation of the Title or Deaconry.

After the consignment of the Bull of creation of Cardinals, the Holy Father Francis exchanged an embrace of peace with each of the new Cardinals.

His Eminence Cardinal Luis Pascal Dri, O.F.M. Cap., was not present among the new Cardinals created.
